Julie is our member of the month for June this year. This is her inspirational journey with the Save My Life Program:
I’m a busy, working mum, married with a son and daughter. I have been on diets off and on since my mum put me on Weight Watchers at the young age of 15. I was a typical yo-yo dieter, I love food and I found it really hard to stick to a plan. I had lost weight before joining the SML Program but could see myself putting it back on without changing my eating habits forever.
I helped my husband lose 2 stone and reduce his cholesterol and blood pressure in 2 years, by changing his diet, researching what foods were healthy and avoiding the statins that the GP wanted to prescribe but I just couldn’t follow it myself. I would eat healthy food and junk and didn’t get anywhere. I had several operations on my Achilles Tendons and a knee op, which didn’t help that I was overweight. I was lucky I didn’t suffer with high blood pressure or cholesterol but for how much longer would I get away with it?
I had seen SML on Facebook via a friend, I have always been interested in eating proper food, rather than meal replacements, so it appealed to me. I decided March 2014 that I would find out more about SML and emailed Toby. We discussed the program and monthly cost and by cutting down on takeaways and wine I could commit to SML.
We met for a taster session on March 31st and decided straight away that this was going to change my life!. I spent the next half hour trying to exercise, I had been so fit years ago, I used to exercise 5 days a week and loved it, that day I could hardly do anything, I found it so hard, I cried when I got home, I had become so unfit and it upset me to think I had let myself get out of control.
I then became determined to regain the fitness that had been so important to me when I was younger. I lost 2 stone in 12 weeks, exercised with Toby and Fran 2-3 times a week and increased the length of my dog walks. By the time I went on holiday I had lost another half a stone.
I couldn’t run for 30 seconds when I first tried running in May, yet by June I ran my first mile in 12 minutes, gradually increasing the distance with Toby’s advice and ran 5-6 km with my husband 4 times on holiday, which felt amazing.
I went bike riding for the first time in 17 years and went on a zip wire across a river from Spain into Portugal, I couldn’t have done that before as I would have been too heavy.
I have now lost 4 stone and feel confident I will keep it off, I now know that the food I am eating is nutritionally good for me, I love the training sessions with the program and additionally I’m running 3-4 times a week clocking up 25kms a week, I am so much fitter than I believed I would be.
The difference in my attitude to food and eating has changed, I allowed myself treats and my weight loss has slowed down, but this program is more than weight loss, it’s about your mind set and how different you feel looking after yourself, now food is not ruling my life, I am now in control.
I felt straight away that Toby really cared, his support and advice has been really important and from the first taster session I could tell he cares deeply about what he is trying to achieve with the program and his clients.
I’m planning on running the London Marathon next year for Charity which will be a huge challenge, something that I thought after putting on so much weight I would never do.
